Barking and Dagenham Council has officially approved new plans to expand the Barking Riverside development in London, marking a major step forward in one of the capital’s largest regeneration projects. The decision paves the way for the next phase of construction, which aims to deliver thousands of additional homes along with essential infrastructure to support a growing community.

The expanded development will include a wide range of community facilities designed to support residents and enhance quality of life. Plans feature the construction of two new schools, hotels, a care home, retail shops, pubs, bars, office spaces, parks, and dedicated student accommodation.

These additions aim to transform Barking Riverside into a fully integrated neighbourhood rather than just a housing project. The focus is on creating a balanced environment where residents can live, work, study, and access essential services within close proximity.

Affordable Housing and Investment Details

By 2024, more than £400 million had already been invested into the regeneration project. A significant portion of the development focuses on affordability, with over 4,000 homes designated as affordable housing. Most of these properties will consist of flats, catering to a wide range of residents including families, students, and working professionals.

The site spans approximately 443 acres of brownfield land and is expected to accommodate around 50,000 people upon completion. The project is being delivered through Barking Riverside Ltd, a joint venture between the Mayor of London and housing association L&Q, which has already secured approval for around 7,000 homes in earlier phases.
